Today, I want to work through a part of scripture that sometimes give the wrong impression or understanding. We need to closely look at it and fully understand it to get to the true meaning of it. So, let`s start…
Scripture we will be looking at is Matthew 16:13-18. I specificaly want to get to the “rock” refered to in verse 18 (And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. – Matthew 16:18 NKJV) Many believe that this rock is Peter, seeing that his name means rock, but is not true. Lets look at the Scripture as see what it tells us.
When Jesus came into the region of Caesarea Philippi, He asked His disciples, saying, “Who do men say that I, the Son of Man, am?” – Matthew 16:13 NKJV. Inn this verse Jesus is asking the disciples who the people say He is.
So they said, “Some say John the Baptist, some Elijah, and others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.” – Matthew 16:14 NKJV. The disciples answered Him saying that some of the people thing that He is Elijah, Jeremiah or even one of the other great prophets that came before.
He said to them, “But who do you say that I am?” – Matthew 16:15 NKJV. Then Jesus asks His disciples who they think or say He is.
Simon Peter answered and said, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” – Matthew 16:16 NKJV. Peter, the overachiever that he was, then answer Jesus and said that Jesus was the Christ (the One that would come and free and restore the Jews), and that He was the Son of the Living God! That is a powerful statement made by Peter. But how did Peter come to have this revealing knowledge? Who “told” him this? Jesus answers this in the next verse…
Jesus answered and said to him, “Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven. – Matthew 16:17 NKJV. Jesus says that no flesh and blood told him this. This was not revealed to him by any human or any human knowledge or understanding. This fact, “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” was reveled to him by “My Father who is in heaven“. A Godly revelation! Not human knowledge!
now we get to the crux of the matter. In the next verse Jesus makes the statement. This is the statement we want to understand.
And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it. – Matthew 16:18 NKJV. Jesus says that he is Peter. Now as was said before, Peter actually means “rock”. But now the question is: Will Jesus actually say that His church will be build on the “rock”, Peter? I don’t think so. In many places both Old and New Testament the Bible tells us that God does not share His honor with anyone! How will He then build His church on the man called Peter?
Many places the Bible tells us that Jesus is The Rock. Elsewhere it also tells us that the church is build on Him. This is part of the clue.
s look again at what the Scripture we just read tells us. Lets look at the statement: “on this rock“. What could this “rock” be? If it was Jesus it would surely be writen “Rock” and not “rock”.
The key to understanding lays in verse 17. This was a Godly revelation that was revealed to Peter. This revelation was that Jesus was the Son of God. And that is what this rock actually means. The church of God is build on the rock of Godly revelation that Jesus is the Son of God. And that is on what the church is and should be build. Not on any human. But only on the knowledge and understanding the Jesus is the Son of God.
So, if your understanding of what the church is build on is anything other than Jesus, your church is build on the wrong rock. Your church can not be build on your pastor, or anything ells! Only Jesus. He should be the sentre of your church. His love and truth, nothing or no-one ells…
